Casco Viejo also known as Casco Antiguo or San Felipe, is the historic district located in Panama City. Completed and settled in 1673, it was built following the near-total destruction of the original Panama city, Panama Viejo in 1671, when the latter was attacked by pirates. The old remaining buildings are in various stages or redevelopment and renovation, with a strictly enforced standard of Historical Authenticity. There is tremendous culture and a feeling which is unique only to this neighborhood in Panama. Casco Viejo today is under major restoration and is full of charming streets, boisterous bars and plenty of cool and independent shops.
